The Allied Vision Alvium Camera Series is an innovative camera platform that addresses the limitations associated with current camera and sensor modules for embedded applications, and offers system designers a previously unknown level of freedom. The ALVIUM System on Chip (SoC) includes a sensor interface designed to support all current and future sensors from leading sensor vendors such as ON Semiconductors and Sony with resolutions ranging from VGA (0.3 Megapixel) to 21 Megapixel. The first release will include four sensors from 0.5 to 5 Megapixel available in the Alvium 1500 and Alvium 1800 Series. We will continuously add new sensors to expand the Alvium range in the following months and years.

On-board image processing

All Alvium cameras build on Allied Vision’s unique ALVIUM® Technology that includes an Image Signal Processor (ISP) coupled with a powerful Image Processing Library (IPL). This allows system engineers to perform image corrections and preprocessing tasks onboard the camera instead of the host system or embedded board. By doing so, they can free up CPU capacity on their host processor for their image processing algorithms or downsize their host to reduce overall system costs.

The Alvium camera modules are available as bare board, open housing and closed housing with various lens mount options for easy hardware integration. Unlike conventional low-cost sensor modules, the Alvium camera series offers a full range of models covering different image sensors and interfaces. Thanks to its platform concept and integrated sensor interface, the Alvium series shares one CSI-2 driver for all models, regardless of the sensor or feature set. This makes it extremely easy to swap cameras or upgrade a system to another sensor. Allied Vision provides drivers for popular embedded boards with the i.MX series SoCs from NXP and the TX Series from NVIDIA, including the latest NVIDIA Xavier.

The Alvium camera platform relies on an ultra-compact single board design with all electronic components fitted on both sides of one 27 x 27 mm board, which is available as a bare board module. Not only does this ensure a small size and light weight, it is also the most robust solution for applications subjects to shocks and vibrations. Housed versions are also available fulfilling the highest standards for sensor alignment for optimal image quality.

The ALVIUM® Technology hardware is a proprietary ASIC chip (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit). Unlike FPGAs commonly used in machine vision cameras, the ALVIUM® ASIC has a much higher integration density which makes it very power efficient. It further integrates an intelligent power management where only the used functionality draws power and the rest is shut-off.
